SLA Teacher

1. What made you decide to be a teacher/work in education?

My mother was a teacher and I have always enjoyed working with kids. I wanted to be a nurse, but then in college changed my mind.

2. Where did you graduate from/what has brought you to this point?

In December 2000, I graduated with my BA in Spanish with bilingual education and an ESL endorsement from University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. I was hired by Mike Gass to teach 1st grade/native language literacy and I did that for 4 years. I moved to Delta for a year and taught ESL there and now I'm back at GES this year to teach K/1 native language literacy and ELA. I graduated with my masters in multicultural education from CU-Boulder in May 2005.

3. How many years have you been teaching/working in education?

6 years

4. What do you like most about teaching/working in education?

I like that every day is different and challenging. It's never boring.

I love teaching Spanish literacy and giving Spanish speaking students such a positive beginning in education and reading. I also enjoy teaching in the same town that I grew up in. My heart is in Gypsum and with the community.

5. Anything else you would like the GES school community to know about you.

My husband, Robert, is principal at Berry Creek Middle School in Edwards.

My daughter, Kaylee, is 5 and will start kindergarten next year and my son, Hayden, will be two at the end of January. I value bilingual education and work very hard to provide equal learning opportunities for all students at GES.
